Clinical BioMechanics of Posture

In addition to our standard chiropractic services, Dr. Dan C. Kjeldgaard is the only doctor in the area who is trained in Clinical Biomechanics of Posture. Using this training along with Power Plate Vibration Machines and advanced spinal traction procedures, the goal of treatment is not only to resolve any symptoms, but to improve the strength, stability and health of the spine to avoid problems in the future.

About Power Plates

Power Plate increases the effectiveness of chiropractic adjustments and other complimentary treatments.

When used by a healthcare professional, vibration therapy has multiple benefits. It provides patients fast results and resolution to long term problems unlike any other treatment available. We’ve had post-surgical success, people going from walkers and wheelchairs to active lifestyles again, and patients avoiding surgery, all using this equipment. The majority of our patients benefit from this treatment. It is safe for most conditions when supervised by a professional. Best of all, patients love this “feel good” therapy!

Power Plate Increases the Frequency of Muscle Contractions

Power Plate increases the frequency of muscle contractions and induces a reflex called the “tonic vibration reflex”. This reflex induces between 95-97% of the muscle fibers to work. Most people performing conventional strength training are only using a maximum of 40% of the muscle fibers at any one time.

Faster muscles contractions, instead of heavier weights produces much less stress and strain on the joints, ligaments and other supportive tissues. Because you speed up the contraction, no long exhausting sessions are required, making Power Plate ideal for both conditioned and deconditioned individuals.

What are the Healthcare Benefits of Power Plate Whole Body Vibration?

  • Posture and spinal curve improvement as seen on pre and post X-rays – documented at Ultimate ChiroCare
  • Improved muscle tone
  • Reduce or eliminate pain to improve function and quality of life
  • Improved balance to prevent falls and improve reaction time
  • Increased circulation
  • Improved core strength and stability to prevent injury and restore function
  • Improved overall strength and power
  • Improved body composition by increasing metabolism
  • Improved movement efficiency
  • Accelerated injury recovery
  • Increased range of motion and flexibility
  • Reduces the stress hormone cortisol to help keep the body health

Building Skeletal Muscle

Skeletal muscle is the muscle that anchors tendons to the bone and allows you to move and maintain posture.

There are two ways to build skeletal muscle:

  1. One way is applying a greater load to the muscle, like weight lifting.
  2. The second way is increasing the frequency at which the muscles contract.

Power Plate whole body vibration changes the frequency of muscle contraction (from 30 to 50 times per second, depending on the machine setting), as opposed to applying a greater load to the muscle (for example heavier weights).

Power Plate Induces a Continuous Stretch Reflex

Your body is programmed with different reflexes, like blinking your eye. A deep-tendon stretch reflex occurs when an examiner taps your knee with a hammer and your leg extends – one tap, one contraction.

In contrast, whole body vibration therapy induces a continuous stretch reflex called the Tonic Vibration Reflex. The vibrating platform causes minute stretches within the muscles that activate this reflex.
Because Power Plate platforms vibrate from 30-50 times per second (30-50 Hz) and in 3 dimensions, these involuntary muscle contractions occur at this accelerated rate as well.

In other words, when you do specific exercises on a Power Plate, your muscles are working much harder than normal, however in a safe and controlled manner. This corresponding body response also means that the deep postural and stabilizing muscles, that are difficult to rehabilitate, can be safely and effectively addressed.
